Kamishibai (Paper Theater) Storytelling

Join guest storyteller Janet Wenner for timeless folktales told in the Kamishibai style on Saturday, August 17 at 11:30 a.m.!

Kamishibai, or paper theater, is a traditional form of Japanese street theater and storytelling. Popular during the Great Depression and through to the development of television, Kamishibai stories were performed by a narrator who traveled to public performance spaces with sets of illustrated boards. The boards were placed in a miniature stage and the narrator would change the scene as the story unfolded.  Manga and anime, widely popular today, grew out of this artistic tradition.
