Stamford Village Library – Long Range Plan, 2020-2025
1.) Issue: The library location is no longer viable for the long term.
Solution: Locate site of new building and begin site plan and construction.
The library location is no longer feasible due to delayed repairs and upkeep and the board will explore options, choose a site and begin site work in preparation for a move to a new building. Exploration of new sites to begin in 2020.
The board will explore and pursue grant funding toward planning and completion of a new building that is compliant with all codes and meets the needs of the library and community.
2.) Issue: Library collection does not reconcile with database inventory.
Solution: Weeding of obsolete records and reconciliation with database needed.
The library manager will inventory and weed shelves and ensure that the inventory on hand matches that in the database. Obsolete records to be identified and request made to 4CLS to remove records. Weeding of adult nonfiction to be completed in 2020. Further weeding of adult fiction for space to begin in 2020. Completion of reconciliation by end of 2021.
3.) Issue: The library does not have a robust teen/YA presence.
Solution: Staff and management will work to draw more teens and young adults.
We will offer programming appealing to young adults, such as escape rooms, use of existing Virtual Reality equipment, and games appealing to teens. Offer a teen STEM program. Increases in teen programming to begin in 2020.
Library management to continue to strive to purchase materials attractive to teens. Teen space to be included in new facility planning.
4.) Issue: Employment opportunities are scarce in the village and surrounding areas
Solution: The library will maximize options to assist with jobs searches and procurement.
Consider holding a job fair. Continue to assist patrons in computer use for applications as needed. Hold a Resume Revamp program several times a year to assist applicants in producing relevant, streamlined resumes. Publicize JobsNow through 4CLS database on social media.
5.) Issue: The library needs to promote a positive, active community presence and higher profile within the service area.
Solution: Raise awareness of the library’s services and programs.
Network in community to promote the library’s programs and services. Join the local equivalent of the Chamber of Commerce to promote and educate about library services. Address local boards and service organizations. Activate Advocacy Committee at board level. Use press releases and interviews to highlight achievements and services. Increase social media use to reach potential supporters.
6.) The library needs to draw young users and families to promote current and future library use.
Solution: Promote library services to young users and families.
The manager will reach out to the school to share library card applications at the elementary level, and will communicate with the school librarian to share ideas and services. Send an email to the school librarian with acquisitions at this level monthly. Continue to work with Junior Library Guild to build collection for this age range. Continue to work with vendors of juvenile nonfiction to expand collection. Staff to distribute card applications for youth at storytime. Initiate programs such as Baby and Me Yoga to draw children and caregivers.
